The Thomson Scientific vision for a total information solution is one that enables users to effortlessly navigate between essential research information sources including SM, full-text documents hosted by primary publishers, a growing list of key databases, and other options such as online public access catalogs:
Links to Full Text
There is no fee for using ISI Links with your ISI Web of Knowledge subscription, and it is easy to link between ISI Web of Knowledge and electronic full text. Our goal is to provide users with comprehensive bi-directional links for navigation back and forth between records in ISI Web of Knowledge and corresponding full-text documents and references. Whether your access is through the Internet, an institutional intranet, or a combination of both, Thomson Scientific enables links to your information resources no matter where they reside.
ISI Links provides reliable access to full text. A link button will only appear when there is an active link to a document. This "no dead links" policy insures that ISI Web of Knowledge users will only get links that resolve to publishers' electronic full-text documents.
Thomson Scientific actively seeks full-text linking partnerships with primary journal publishers and content hosts for all available electronic journals covered by ISI Web of Knowledge. Currently, Thomson Scientific links to over 7,000 unique full text titles, and over 20,000 journal instances. These include a growing population of open access journals and retrospective archives.

How ISI Links Works
ISI Links is a combination of several important processes:
- ongoing processing of the ISI Citation Databases
- regular processing of each publisher's electronic content
- creation of the ISI Links table for linking ISI Web of Knowledge to primary content and links to ISI Web of Knowledge from the publisher's site
- integration of the ISI Links table into ISI Web of Knowledge for intelligent and easy end-user links functionality
ISI Links begins with the ISI Citation Databases, a multidisciplinary bibliographic collection from over 8,000 international scholarly journals. All bibliographic information and the citations or references are processed, unified and indexed. These steps now support linking the Thomson Scientific source records (the basic bibliographic data) to the corresponding full-text documents. This process also provides the basis for .
The matching of the bibliographic information in ISI Web of Knowledge and the publisher content occurs on a regular and ongoing basis as the publishers provide journal data feeds to Thomson Scientific. Data is provided either directly from the publisher—or from a file provided by CrossRef which includes all DOIs and metadata for participating members of CrossRef. The publisher's bibliographic data is processed and used to create a links table. When the publisher's data matches corresponding Thomson Scientific records in the links table, a full-text link button is posted on the article full record in ISI Web of Knowledge. This synchronized process supports the Thomson Scientific "no dead links" policy, which insures that ISI Web of Knowledge users will only get links that resolve to the full text.

Links to Other Resources
ISI Links offers navigation to a wide range of scholarly information resources including genetic, chemical and patent information. Links are currently available to these key databases:
National Center for Biotechnology Information GenBank Database
Links are available from ISI Web of Knowledge to the database. The GenBank database is a free and publicly available genetic sequence database hosted by NCBI. Thomson Scientific enables access to GenBank's protein sequence database and the DNA database from corresponding records in ISI Web of Knowledge.
Other ISI Links Options
Links can also be enabled from ISI Web of Knowledge to your library's online public access catalog (OPAC)—integrating additional information resources. Your customized OPAC query can easily be integrated into your account using ISSN or title. Contact the ISI Links Team to take advantage of this feature.
Customers now have another option for linking all their electronic resources and services using OpenURL. You can integrate a link-server as a source of links in most ISI Web of Knowledge products. The link button can also be customized to your institution. Web of Science is currently a target of link-servers, and additional ISI Web of Knowledge databases will support inbound links as new versions are made available.
How to Activate OPAC or OpenURL Links
To activate OPAC or OpenURL links, contact the Links Team at . For OPAC links, provide the link gateway URL for your OPAC utility. For OpenURL links, provide the base URL of your OpenURL server, and the gif URL for the button if you want the link to be customized.
Additional OpenURL linking is available using 1Cate technology from Openly Informatics, Inc. Please contact your Account Manager if you are interested in more information on how to find out more about the 1Cate link-server and how it might be used in your library.
Thomson Scientific will continue to add more linking partners, more databases, and more information resources to its menu of options, allowing our customers flexibility and choice in creating an integrated information environment.
