1958    Eugene Garfield starts ISI by borrowing $500 from Household Finance. Current Contents® (CC®) of Chemical, Pharmaco-Medical & Life Sciences is the sole product. It covers 200 journals in about 32 pages per issue.

1960 ISI introduces Current Abstracts of Chemistry and Index Chemicus®

ISI incorporates under Pennsylvania law.

1961 ISI receives a grant from the National Institutes of Health to produce the experimental Genetics Citation Index using citation indexing. First, a comprehensive interdisciplinary index was produced. From this database, citations relating to genetics were extracted. Published in 1963, the comprehensive database eventually becomes the 1961 Science Citation Index® (SCI) which included 562 journals and 2 million citations. The 1964 SCI comprises five volumes.

1966 Magnetic tapes of citation data and source data become available.

1967 1,800 periodicals are covered on an annual basis.

The weekly citation file consists of approximately 65,000 cited references from approximately 5,800 source items.

CC Chemical Sciences is introduced.

1969 CC Education is published, along with CC Behavioral, Social and Management Sciences.

1970 CC Agricultural, Food, and Veterinary Sciences, and CC Engineering and Technology is published.

1971 Current Contents covers 4,000 scientific titles; 650 contents pages are received each week.

1972 Estimate 1 million scientists worldwide are accessing the ISI database.

CC Life Sciences has a 90% renewal rate - chiefly individual scientists subscribe. Average non-library copy is known to have 5 or 6 "pass along" readers. Average weekly readership is estimated at greater than 200,000.

1973 Social Sciences Citation Index® (SSCI) is launched.

1978 The twentieth anniversary of ISI is celebrated!

ISI employs 470 people and has offices in 9 countries.

5,200 journals in 31 languages are indexed.

Ground is broken for the current corporate headquarters at 3501 Market Street.

Arts and Humanities Citation Index® (AHCI) is launched.

1988 ISI provides Current Contents on Diskette®.

JPT Holdings acquires a controlling interest of ISI.

85% of revenues are generated by print subscriptions, 15% by electronic subscriptions. ISI purchases Medical Documentation Services® (MDS), a provider of customized biomedical and pharmaceutical information.

1989 Science Citation Index® Compact Disk Edition wins Product of the Year from Online Inc.

1990 ISI employs 550 people.

1992 ISI is acquired by Thomson Business Information, a subsidiary of The Thomson Corporation.

1996 In less than twenty years, revenues shift from their previous balance (see 1988) to 34% generated by print subscriptions, 66% by electronic.

1997 ISI launches ISI Web of Science®

Internet and Intranet access to Current Contents introduced as Current Contents Connect®

1998 ISI celebrates its 40th Anniversary.

ISI employs 800 people with offices in 7 countries.

8,000+ titles published in 35 languages are indexed.

53% of all United States Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institutions have licensed the ISI Web of Science.

Leslie Singer becomes first female President and CEO of ISI.

1999 ISI Current Web Contents, a modular component to Current Contents Connect, is launched. The new initiative recognizes the value that high-quality, Web sites represent to the serious researcher.

Nearly 70% of all U.S. Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institutions have licensed the ISI Web of Science.

Derwent Innovations IndexSM is launched in cooperation with Thomson Scientific sister company, Derwent Information, Inc.

1999 ISI Researchsoft acquires Niles Software, Inc.

2000

ISI enters the new century with full Year 2000 Compliance.

2001

ISI launches ISIHighlyCited.comSM - a free, expert gateway to the world’s most cited and influential scientific authors.

ISI introduces ISI Essential Science IndicatorsSM - a powerful evaluation tool that measures scientific trends and ranks the performance of countries, researchers, institutions, corporations, and journals.

ISI develops ISI Web of KnowledgeSM - the single, sophisticated platform that unites journal literature, patents, chemical compounds, and genetic sequencing, and integrates proceedings and additional print and electronic sources.
